Review: The Good One by Amie Nichols

****3.5 Stars****

Damien is an ex male escort who runs a very successful male escort company in Vegas. River runs a hotel in Vegas, she's runs the hotel as part of her rich family's chain of businesses. Her younger sister Charity is getting married and River is organising the bachelorette party. She has hired out a club owned by Damien and several of his employees to keep the party guests entertained. When she visits Damien's offices to meet with his assistant to pay the invoices, he gets his first glimpse of her and is immediately in lust. As a man who has had a lot of sex he is surprised by his body's reaction to her, he has to have her. He embarks on a mission to get to know this woman who has such a strong effect on him.
Damien I found to be a bit of a contradictory character, sometimes he was the bossy, alpha, caveman kinda guy, then other times he came across as a bit of a sap in his desperation when it came to River. It was almost like 2 different personalities in one character. I liked his alpha side and I think that side worked better, and it was definitely more appealing, but his desperate side was a bit of a turn off. I just didn't get him as a character.
I liked River, she was strong and successful, her own woman, and I felt for her that she had the responsibility of keeping her wild child little sister out of trouble.
Concerning the relationship between both characters, I just didn't connect with it. It went too full on too quickly. Very insta-love. If there'd just been mention of strong feelings I think it would have been more believable, but instead it went right into that "I love you so much I can't breathe" phase, the kind of feelings that only develop with time. I'm not a fan of insta-love, but I can deal, but the depths of their love was too much for such a short time and they just didn't know each other.
Having said that though the story around them was great, a fair bit of angst to keep you biting your nails, a few "villians" that will make you want to throw your Kindle.
I wanted to love it more than I did, but I'm one of these people then when I don't connect with a main character there's nothing short of a miracle that will pull me back in, and I neeeed to LOVE the male lead, and sadly Damien just didn't do it for me.
However the glimpse I got into Josie and Brett's story had me hungering for more! I really liked these 2 side characters and I think their book will be just fab!
