Review: Real World (Bend or Break #5) by Amy Jo Cousins

****4 Stars****

Ugh I wanted to strangle Tom for pretty much all of this book, I was really frustrated at his sullen mood. I was so excited to hear we were getting more of Tom and Reese's story as I loved their first installment and snippets of them throughout the series. So I guess I was expecting to just find them happy but I guess there wouldn't be much story to that especially given the angst I expect from this series and as the title says that is the real world.
Tom and Reese seem happy together until Tom begins to retreat into himself, once again, at the news of his father's imminent release from prison. All his old fears come back with a vengeance and he seems unable to shake off the feelings that he is going to be sucked back into the media spotlight. I hated that Tom didn't just share his concerns with Reese, who had to resort to drastic measures at times to drag it out of Tom.
Meanwhile Reese finds himself having an unexpected opportunity at work and so their moods are at polar opposite. I loved Reese, he was not letting his man skulk away for anything and did his best in trying to pull Tom out of his funk. However the flattery his boss is giving him is just the attention Reese needs and deserves, and what Tom needed to make him realise what he stood to lose.
A lovely novella in this series and I loved the outcome of the story though it was an anxious read for the most part.

When talking fails, it’s time to break out the big guns.

Five years ago, Tom Worthington busted his ass to overcome the fear and paranoia that led him to withdraw from the world and nearly lose his boyfriend. He never thought he’d find himself right back there, shutting Reese out, keeping secrets again.

Reese Anders is ready to try anything to get Tom to talk: if he can’t seduce his boyfriend with food, he’ll get Tom to open up in bed. But even Tom’s confession that his dad is getting out of prison soon doesn’t clear the air between them. And as the holidays approach, intensive mentoring from a new British boss creates more distractions, until Reese is keeping secrets of his own.

At a company Christmas party, it only takes Tom one look at Reese’s new boss to figure out how much danger their relationship is in. But he’s not about to let the connection that started all those years ago at Carlisle come to an end. It’s time to deal with their problems like adults. Face to face. Or back to front. Starting in the bedroom.
