Review: Keeping Secrets by Lisa Eugene

5 Heartfelt Stars
I floved this book hard.
Alexa Kennedy is what appears to be a shy self conscious young woman who strives to be the best at everything she does. Alexa is studying medicine and is aiming for Valedictorian to win a placement at the prestigious Mayo Clinic. However Alexa puts up a front with people when deep down she’s struggling inside and battling some really dreadful disorders which she thinks are beyond her control. Everything starts to come crashing down when she crashes her Father’s car when trying to get to the hospital in an emergency with one of her patients. This is where she meets Dex Blakewell.
Dex is a successful businessman, he’s good looking, charming and very swoon worthy, however he has his own demons brewing away inside.
Alexa and Dex form a beautiful friendship but with each of them having issues can it turn around and blossom into anything more?
Okay I did not want to give much of the plot away as I feel it would ruin the emotional experience that this book is. The Author has done a brilliant job and through her own medical profession and extensive research has got the issues surrounding mental health illnesses in this book spot on. I am always wary of reading books that have specific medical or mental health subjects incase the Author gets it wrong. I love the way this story pans out and highlights the emotions and situations a person can go through when dealing with what goes through their mind. I love Lisa Eugene’s books and Grayson in particular is a favourite of mine but this book is equally as good. Books like these are rare to find, when we do see them the subject matter can be basic and barely scratches the surface of the characters problems but this one gives it all, each and every step from onset to diagnosis to treatment as well as a perfect love story and the battles within it. I totally recommend this book and I applaud the Author for such a heart warming and sincerely true account of illnesses people battle every day but go unrecognised. Well Done.

Is that how a little girl sits?
No, Daddy.
How should a little girl sit?
Shoulders back and tummy in.
And how should a little girl look?
Always neat and pretty
That’s my girl.

Twenty-four-year-old Alexa Kennedy is beautiful, sharp as a whip, and at the top of her medical school class. She’s also been waging a war in her head for as long as she can remember. Depression. Hatred. Self-loathing. These feelings feed the pain inside her, fueling her quest for a perfection that she can never achieve.

In one life-changing moment, Dex Blakewell crashes into her world. Dex is funny, gorgeous, and irresistible. He chases away the darkness and fills her with light and laughter. An unusual friendship blossoms, making no demands or expectations.

Friendship turns into an unexpected love and a delicious passion. Alexa realizes that the only thing tethering her to sanity is their connection. But even Dex’s strength can’t keep her demons at bay forever.

When life overwhelms her, the outside world starts to mirror her inner turmoil. And when Dex discovers she’s been keeping horrible secrets, will she finally shatter or find a way through the darkness? Will the promise of love be enough to save her from self-destruction?
