We met Lathan somewhat briefly in the first book, he made for an intriguing character with the run ins Xander had with him. I was excited to find out more about him and what his deal was, and with this second book we aren't left disappointed. Lathan has a gift of his own, the ability to read people's memories. One thing I love about these books is the way the author explains these phenomenon abilities, she makes it so that it doesn't come across as sci-fi, she makes it so you could believe it is possible. Lathan's abilities are described as being caused by overactive olfactory senses. He has a particularly strong sense of smell and since memories are tied to our senses he can pick up on other people's.
Our heroine in this book is Evanee (beautiful name by the way!) Evanee has lived a life of suffering and struggle but her life is changed irrevocably when she meets Lathan who is determined to protect her from harm. Evanee has a special quirk of her own, but this quirk could put her in danger.
Lathan is hard not to fall for, he's big and tough, tattooed and rough but he also has a softer side, a protective streak a mile wide but underneath all that, there's also a sensitive, unsure side. You can't not fall under his spell right from the off.
These books are unlike anything I've ever read before, I'd struggle to compare them to any other book or series, all I can say is they are really, really good. And if you're looking for something different then these are certainly that. I love the authors writing style too, I find I connect with it really well and find these books totally gripping. I would describe myself as being fascinated by this series, I can't wait to see where she takes it, where the background story of all the characters introduced so far is going and whose story will be next. I can't even speculate with this story but I'm sure the author has more twists and turns in store for us!
