Well, I've got to start this review by saying that YA is not generally the genre that I'm drawn too. On the whole I usually find them a little disappointing, in that I mostly find the characters a little too immature for my taste.
So, starting this book, I was not overly optimistic but determined to try and have an open mind and I'm pleased to say that I did enjoy it!
I found the two main characters extremely frustrating! I wanted to knock some sense into them, get them to pull themselves together. I guess that was why I was compelled to read on....I wanted to know what happens!
Matisse (Mati) lives in a whirlwind of perpetual guilt. She doesn't seem to think she pleased anyone, least of all her pushy and overbearing parents. She's desperate to please almost everyone and somehow still thinks she's failing.
There's mention of Mati wasting a year at a prestigious art school but we're never told what happened that year.
Beau is the rebelling, partying bad-boy biker. There are rumours of drugs and Mati has seen, first hand, the streams of make-up smeared girls leaving his bedroom. But Beau has a secret that few know and he's struggling to cope.
Mati and Beau are drawn to each other though they keep telling themselves that it could never work between them.
Will Beau share his secret with Mati? When he does, will she be there for him or will he lose her like her fears? Or has he underestimated her sheer willpower?
This is not a "steaming hot" read with loads of descriptive sex but it's real. A story of struggles and the things life sometimes throws at people....how they cope (or don't cope) and how it can tear people apart if they let it.
If you're looking for a sweet read that'll pull at your heart strings, you'll enjoy this tale.
