Review: The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston

*****5 Stars*****

Hot Vikings and hardcore female assassins: does it get any better than that?! I think not! Seriously, Shelly Laurenston is your go to author is you want a female lead who is a bad ass mofo. This book is the first book in Laurenston’s new “Call of the Crows” series. In a new twist this series follows the exploits of several clans that are sponsored by Norse gods. Think Dark Hunters but with Norse Gods. Most of the clans are descended from ancient Scandinavians except for the Crows. The Crows have one thing in common, they’ve all died horribly and in their last dying moments they were filled with rage and the need for strength. So the goddess Skuld gives them a second at life with new powers. The Crows come from all walks of life and ethnicities, which kind of annoys the other clans, which I find amusing. Kera is retired Marine who has seen a lot of action and is now trying to adjust to regular life when it’s disrupted by an act of horrible violence. Her journey as a Crow is really interesting because she has a really strong moral compass and sense of organization which her fellow Crows do not have. I love that Kera doesn’t spend a second whining or complaining. She sucks it up and does her job. Also she has a HUGE heart, she’s so caring and generous but that doesn’t mean that she’s a push over. This girl can kick some serious butt. 100% warrior woman. I love the dynamic between all the Crows, no one writes strong unapologetically fierce heroines like Shelly Laurenston. They can be rude and crude (hilariously so) but they fight hard like the boys and they play hard like them too. Speaking of boys, Vig Rundstrom…..holy Viking hotness! Poor Vig, he has a demeanor that tends to scare away the other members of his clan, the Ravens. But beneath that slightly intimidating yet totally sexy exterior lurks a big marshmallow, especially where Kera is concerned. He’s a lethal fighter and yet also a loving brother and loyal friend. I’ve seen a lot of stories where the hero and heroine are a study in opposites but Kera and Vig seem to be cut of the same cloth, a symphony in similarity. Which absolutely works for them, you can feel the chemistry from these two right from the start. The plot is very fast paced and there are constant action scenes and plot developments. You will love ALL the secondary characters (both Crows and Ravens) and their hilarious antics. Another sensational read from Shelly Laurenston!

Blurb:

Kera Watson never expected to face death behind a Los Angeles coffee shop. Not after surviving two tours lugging an M16 around the Middle East. If it wasn’t for her hot Viking customer showing up too late to help, nobody would even see her die.
In uncountable years of service to the Allfather Odin, Ludvig “Vig” Rundstrom has never seen anyone kick ass with quite as much style as Kera. He knows one way to save her life—but she might not like it. Signing up with the Crows will get Kera a new set of battle buddies: cackling, gossiping, squabbling, party-hearty women. With wings. So not the Marines.
But Vig can’t give up on someone as special as Kera. With a storm of oh-crap magic speeding straight for L.A., survival will depend on combining their strengths: Kera’s discipline, Vig’s loyalty… and the Crows’ sheer love of battle. Boy, are they in trouble.
