OUAA synopsis

"Sugar, Jules and I had run for our lives. Only our shadows had followed us. And no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't outpace them."
All-around bad boy, and twenty-five-year-old heir to the Jameson fortune, Tommy Jameson, knows three things: - His family is disappointed in him. - Overcoming his addictions won't necessarily crush his vices. - He is wildly in love with Sugar Scarborough, a girl who is dealing with her own addictions and an insatiable need to please. Danger sends Tommy, Sugar and their friend, Julian Fitzpatrick, a heavily medicated, socially dysfunctional genius, fleeing from Green Willow Recovery Center. Now, together, they will face the outside world and uncover a horrifying mystery while being forced to confront their inner demons

*****5 Stars*****

I was just so excited to see a new book from Tess that I didn’t read the blurb and from the first two chapters I was sucked but also taken aback at the basis of this story from Tess. Though as I have come to expect from Tess this story just hits the mark for me, it is a little different from a lot of her other work and is executed perfectly. The character development is so well done that you quickly build an image of and an attachment to these characters as is the case with all of Tess’ books.
We meet the main character Tommy as he is preparing to leave prison following a two-year sentence and is contemplating what his future may hold as he remembers the events that led to his jail term, his time with Sugar. A sassy yet needy Southern girl, with many issues and a heart of gold who he is in love with.
Tommy, Sugar and their friend Jules were troubled young adults living in a recovery centre to overcome the individual addictions and issues that they each have. None of these kids seem to be anywhere near recovering from their issues until an incident occurs one evening that forces them to flee the centre and have to face up to their issues and the fallout from that night whilst on the run.
You couldn’t help but be rooting for them all the way through the book as they quickly realise they are on their own and are going to have to find their own way back. The issues that arise in their time on the road are sometimes rather funny, some heartbreaking and some really sweet as they rally together to help each other through and there are a few gut wrenching moments along the way
My favourite part of this book was Tommy’s summary of the centre’s character and staff members as they all come together for a baseball game in the garden, I was chuckling to myself at the nicknames and descriptions. This is a part of Tess’ writing that I love, that even the most random of side characters or even animals are brought to life with her words.
I loved the ending and the epilogue but I would love to see more of Tommy, Sugar and Jules in the future.
