Review: Shadowboxer (Tapped Out, #1) by Cari Quinn

****4 Stars****

Mia grew up with very little she's had it hard, a rough life to this point. Tray has had everything he could ever need but walked away from it to be happy.. Or what he thought would make him happy. Both are underground fighters. Mia is trying to make a name for herself, she wants to be the best and to do that she has to beat the best. There's one problem ... Tray doesn't fight women! ...
I really enjoyed this book, an angsty, broken character with a dark past is always good in my opinion. The dialogue was a little repetitive in places but overall didn't ruin the tone of the book. Tray though as much as I loved him I hated his attitude towards his upbringing and well to do family. Where Mia lost everything; he chose to leave everything behind. Their contrasting backgrounds make for an interesting read. Their blossoming relationship isn't portrayed as this beautiful epiphany like in most books, it's hard and gritty and in places hard to read. The first sex scene definitely wasn't pretty and I kind of liked that their story as a whole wasn't a pretty, light, airy read. This book pushes you past your comfort zone into a real emotional war zone. There were things about this story that drove me nuts but that just added to the enjoyment of the read for me. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters and I can't wait to read more from Cari Quinn.

She's in for the fight of her life...with the man who only wants to be her lover.

Fighter Mia Anderson has faced the dark side of life and survived. But just getting by is no longer enough. To fund her new life with her baby sister, she’s determined to beat the reigning king of the male fighters in New York’s underground MMA circuit, Tray “Fox” Knox.

Tray refuses to fight a woman, until he learns Mia’s tougher than anyone he has ever known. He soon realizes he wants more from her than blows and blood, and he’s willing to hit below the belt to get it. He’ll fight her, but if he wins, she spends the night in his bed. All night long, his rules. No tapping out.

Mia agrees, certain that he’ll lose. What she doesn’t realize is that Tray loves to fight dirty…and that this match may end up being the most important one of their lives.

Warning: please be advised this book contains content some may find triggering (past sexual trauma) and also contains graphic sex and language.
