I seem to be on a bit of a depressing/emotional YA kick this month! Good thing I restocked my tissue supply after reading Other Breakable Things, because I definitely needed several while reading Letters to the Lost.
I absolutely loved the premise of this story going in and was so happy it lived up to my hopes and expectations. Juliet is trying to find her way through the crushing grief she feels after the loss of her mother by leaving letters written to her on her grave. Declan, doing community service at the the cemetery, stumbles on one of her letters and writes back. Soon they are actively exchanging letters and developing feelings for the person behind the pen.
To add some drama Juliet and Declan actually do know each other! They are classmates...classmates who basically detest each other. There were some extremely melodramatic moments here, but I wasn't frustrated because I really felt for the characters (the two main ones and the multiple secondary ones also deal with their own problems). Juliet was so full of grief and Declan was so full of anger, it was hard for them to see through those emotions. Their letters gave them a chance to attempt to heal and connect on a level both desperately needed. My only real complaint here is that I desperately wanted an epilogue of some kind.
