Review: If I Break (If I Break #1) by Portia Moore

*****5 Stars*****

Well, I was totally absorbed with this book, I fell in love with Portia's writing style and was very intrigued by the way this story was told. Each chapter is dated and the story flashes between past and present as each chapter passes.
In the present chapters we encounter Lauren, unhappy in her marriage to Cal, he's the love of her life but his working away so much and not returning calls is making her feel like she's alone in their marriage. In the past chapters we get to see how Lauren met Cal and how their whirlwind romance began. You fall in love with them as a couple which makes the present chapters all the more heartbreaking.
As a reader we are left guessing throughout this book as to the mystery of Cal, what is he doing when he's gone? Who is he with? We really know nothing of his past and Lauren doesn't know a whole lot herself.
I love a book with mystery that has me speculating about where the story is going and how it will end. Most of the time I can guess right pretty early, or at least I can see how it will end before I get there. Well this book totally kept me the dark and the ending blindsided me. I loved that I didn't see the twists and turns coming, it kept me on my toes and I was addicted to the unpredictable nature of the story.
With that shocker ending I can't wait to see where this story goes in the next book. I can't recommend this enough, it's brilliantly written and will well and truly mess with your mind!

This is not your typical happily ever after...

Lauren Brooks wants to do three things: Escape the small town she grew up in, get accepted to her dream school in Chicago, and graduate without drowning in debt. Now she’s working her ass off to do just that.

With a full course load and a waitressing job at one of the hottest night clubs in Chicago, she does not have time for distractions;namely ones who only want to get into her pants. She’s been burned before. Only a fool goes for a second round.. With just two semesters left until graduation, everything’s on track.

Until she meets Cal. Enter distraction.

At six-foot-two, with ebony hair, deep grey eyes, and a smile that could only hide an agenda, she knows he’s trouble. And for the first time in her life, a little trouble might be just what she needs.

No what she wants.

It isn't like she’d ever marry the guy.
Until she does.

What she thinks will be her happily ever after, is only the beginning. Cal has a secret. One that makes loving him come with a price, and being his wife cost more than she bargained for.
