It has been a while since I read a NA book and this one did not disappoint, I read this as one of the authors is a favourite of mine in another genre so I wanted to read more of her work. As this is a NA book there isn’t any sex scenes as such though there is sexual references and quite tame intimate scenes.
Bishop Riley is a drummer in an award winning band at the young age of eighteen and he is clearly strug...gling with everything fame brings and after his crutch of drugs and booze leads to a hospital admittance his manager decides he needs a break and sends him to Alaska with an aide to help him tackle his issues. Bishop isn’t happy and sees this as a punishment rather than help and is determined not to play along.
Penny Jones is fierce, I loved her from the offset, she is a champion hockey player on the boy’s team at high school and loves Alaska passionately. Her home life is unconventional and she is often left looking after her Gramps who has dementia. Penny holds unrequited love for her best friend Mitch so is surprised when the surly boy staying in the family’s rental cabins along with his “uncle” catches her attention.
I loved the build-up in the friendship between Bishop and Penny in the first instance and how that friendship helped them both to cope with their situations. Once they realise their friendship is something more Bishop regrets having had to keep his true self from Penny in order to protect his identity. Just as he decides to come clean fate steps in and blows both of their worlds apart and my heart hurt for them both and the situations they were dealing with.
I loved the outcome of this story and though I hurt for both of them it was worth it for the perfect conclusion.
