Review: The Player (Rouge Passion #1) by J.D. Chase

****4 Stars****

The Player is book #1 in the Rouge Passion series.
There's nothing worse that clashing with a new boss - a sexy, arrogant one - but this is exactly the situation Isla finds herself in.
She's ambitious and trying to pull herself out of a post break-up funk. She's determined to get her life back on track and impress the new boss in order to get the promotion she feels should be hers.
However, she was not expecting Xander! He's tall, obnoxious, hot and utterly infuriating, leading to some heated clashes.
With both Isla and Xander hiding something, trust is not easily come by but passion - steamy, dirty passion - oozes in abundance.
I didn't really connect with the characters. There's no doubt that Xander is hot, hot, hot and his tongue is to die for but for me there was just something missing. I can only guess that because I guessed his secret quite early on, that maybe that affected the way I feel about him. I just can't put my finger on it...
However, I DID enjoy the story and it's brilliantly written, in perfect JD Chase style. It's so descriptive but not "flowery" or with superfluous details and I'll be digging straight into book #2.

Feisty redhead, Isla Hamilton, is the ambitious Assistant General Manager of a luxury Kensington hotel. When the hotel is sold, she is desperate to become the new General Manager. There’s just one problem standing in her way, and it’s standing over six feet tall - the king of arrogance and inappropriateness, Xander Rhodes. Her mind hates his obnoxious, godlike presence but, no matter how hard she fights it, her body reacts to his distinct style of directness, particularly his dirty mouth, and maintaining a professional distance soon becomes difficult.

Events from the recent past haunt her, forcing her to swear that she’ll never give another man a chance to hurt her. But Xander isn’t interested in commitment, he’s too busy battling his own demons that are shrouded in secrecy so he can’t hurt her, right? When he warns her that spending the night with him would only make her crave him like an addiction, she is sceptical and determined to prove him wrong. If anything, she’d make him crave her.

But will she be ready to handle the fallout if she succeeds?

Warning: adult content - dirty talk and hot sex may offend the prudish!
